Payphone Tricks Pictures at bottom of page .. BT Call Cards Try dialling 144 (BT Phonecard no.) Then when asked for card no.&pin put in *5555 0000 5555 # (If you get no. wrong you will get "number not recognised" message. If you get it right you will get "Please dial the number you are calling including the STD code". BUT! when you dial the number, you do not get through,You will get "Please hold while we are connecting you to a BT Operator". 2 things here, first if you have managed to see a BT call -card copy no. off it & you can then quote it to Operator who should not ask for your pin no...Hey Presto....(Not a good idea for calling home!) Second ,If anyone has the time to play around with the digits so they get through without getting the "transferring you to operator" then that would be VERY educational don'y ya think!. The Free Taxi Phone everyone has seen these somewhere get a tonedialer , take the phone off the hook , now hold down the hook with your finger hold down the first number of your call with your tone dialer and take your finger off the hook . wait a few seconds and then dial your number as usual. The Follow On Call Trick This again is for the slightly older bt payphone , silver/grey with follow on call button , mostly outdoors . ............ Play around with this and tell me the correct version maybe you dont hangup first of all or something . Free calls from BT Payphone 200 MKII: BT Payphone 200 MKII phones allow you to make free calls with a few key presses. The phone is normally cream coloured with a brown handle, and found indoors only. They don't take phonecards, and are quite an old style. Anyway, to make free calls, pick up the handset and dial "* # 2 5 8 0" (That's Star, Hash, 2580). then the number you require. This works locally, nationally, internationally and on 0891 etc. It appears that this may be a number pre-programmed into the phone when it is installed, for an engineer to test the line. You will probably find this type of phone in pubs, halls and the Co-Op shops. Free calls from other BT Payphones: You will notice on phone boxes there is a cable coming out of them (now they are encased in steel but it is thin and can be cut open). The cable contains four wires, two of them are for sending and receiving the voice, one is a ground and the other is used to transmit codes from the phone. Lift the receiver and make sure there is a dial tone. Then cut one of the wires, if the dial tone disapears then re-connect it and try a different one. When you cut the wire that sends the codes there will still be a dial tone. Now make your call (you will still have to insert money as the phone needs 10p before it lets you dial), the cut wire means that no cost codes are sent and the phone doesn't charge. When you finish your call hang-up and reconnect the cut wire, the phone then GIVES YOU YOUR MONEY BACK! Alternatively, if you just want cash, cut the correct wire and wait for a few people to make some calls. Then go back and reconnect the wire, the phone will then return all the money in it's return chute. British phone boxes don't hold that much cash, especially if most of the calls have been 10 or 20p so it is best to check your phone regularly. BE CAREFUL - phone boxes are checked every couple of days so make sure you don't leave very obvious signs the phone has been tampered with. More Free Calls : Another, but rather complicated, way to make calls is by following the directions given below. Most phones though have had this wonderful facility removed from them but you may be able to find a remote phone that hasn't had this facility removed. FOLLOW THESE STEPS CAREFULLY - this technique requires PRECISE timing. 1: Lift receiver and hold phone to your ear, you should hear the dial tone. 2: Whilst listening to the phone pull the handset lever down, you will hear a click and approx 2 secs later another click - you should lift the lever EXACTLY on this click. Listen to it a few times so you know when it is coming and you are able to lift the reciever as it happens NOT after you hear it. 3: If you have done this correctly then the display should read 79 or 77 POUNDS 4: Now pull the lever down again, you will hear the phone automatically dial a ten digit number followed by a click then approx 2 secs later another click the lever should be lifted EXACTLY on this click (same as step 2). 5: If everything was done correctly the display should read 55 POUNDS and 26p. You are now free to make as many calls as you want. When you use up the 55 quid the money counter will reset at 99.99 and you can keep calling. Note # If you are using a payphone and it "does" swallow your money , call the operator and tell her to credit it to your phone bill , but i stuck in a £20 note dosent work.
